POSITION SUMMARY

Greenpeace USA is a $30 million organization with staff in 30 cities in the U.S. We use creative and confrontational tactics to run effective and hard-hitting campaigns that inspire our members and help protect the planet. We are also part of the global Greenpeace network and utilize our international power to drive change around the world. The Greenpeace USA communications team is integral to all of the work that we do.

The Director of Campaign Communications is a key role, driving the broader communications strategy for Greenpeace US and uses data insights to oversee the development of overarching narratives, messaging, positioning and media content across campaigns (Climate, Democracy, Plastics, Oceans) to enhance the impact and effectiveness of distinct campaign and organization-wide goals.

The Director will have overall responsibility for ensuring the integration of national media strategies with campaigning and other organizational goals to increase visibility in the national news media, including print, broadcast and online news outlets, and in select local media for strategic campaign purposes.

The Campaign Communications Director is an exempt, full-time, benefits eligible role that can be based in any location Greenpeace is authorized to work in and reports to the Communications Director based in DC.

The Campaign Communications Director will:

Work closely with organization leadership to help guide and realize the effective utilization of news media to achieve campaign and organizational goals.
Oversee development of media strategies, objectives, plans and evaluations working closely with the Director of Communications. Participate in the development and implementation of the organization’s overarching communications strategy.
Manage the communications strategists embedded on GPUS campaign teams, which includes staff in multiple offices/locations. Ensure that the communications team plays a leadership role in the development of key project, campaign and organizational messaging. Ensure consistency and maximum appropriate visibility of GPUS in external messaging.
Ensure communication and coordination between the Program and Development department. ,Manage external consultants and agencies as needed.
Manage key communications and relationships with internal and external project stakeholders including Greenpeace International, Greenpeace national/regional offices (NROs) and external project agencies and consultants.
Develop and manage effective project reporting and evaluation mechanisms.
Apprise Director of Communications and co-Executive Directors on potential and imminent public relations crises and, working closely with Communications Director, help manage media crises and public statements on litigation and other sensitive issues.
Serve as organization spokesperson when required.
Write statements, op-eds and other materials and rigorously edit all public statements, news releases and other output as required.
Develop and manage the budget of the media department and monitor expenses.
Maintain relationships with journalists and ensure press lists are updated regularly.
Minimum requirements for the Campaign Communications Director include:

Minimum 7 years related experience required, including earned media experience and some experience delivering digital content or integrated digital strategy
Minimum 5 years experience managing teams
Knowledge of and/or passion for environmental issues
Demonstrated leadership ability to deliver on departmental and organizational goals.
Excellent writing, editing and computer skills required.
Editorial Judgment - demonstrates judgment based on a thorough understanding of Greenpeace goals, target audience, campaign and department objectives. Makes the right editorial decisions, taking account of conflicting views where necessary.
Media Relationships - existing relationships within the US media market.
Creative Thinking - able to transform creative ideas into practical reality. Can look at existing situations and problems in novel ways and develop creative solutions.
Planning and organization - able to plan in order to establish an efficient and appropriate course of action for self and others. Prioritizes and plans activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
Communication - able to ensure Greenpeace messaging is understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.
Management experience - demonstrated ability to lead a team of high performing communications professionals.
Managing relationships and team building - able to build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. Works cooperatively with others to be part of a team.
Resilience – demonstrates effectiveness by managing emotions in the face of pressure and setbacks or when dealing with provocative situations. Demonstrates an approach to work that is characterized by commitment, motivation and energy.
Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals and groups. Able to understand and appreciate different and opposing perspectives on an issue, adapt an approach as the requirements of a situation change, and change or easily accept changes in one’s own job requirements.

The salary for this position starts at $95,000 with full benefits and is commensurate with experience.
