Full-time Scientific Manager – Infectious Disease

We are seeking a highly motivated Scientific Manager to work on new treatment modalities to address the threat of infectious diseases by joining our growing Infectious Diseases Research Unit (IDRU) which is focused on Infectious Diseases at Upper Providence, PA. The IDRU is one of the Research Units in the R&D organization at GSK and is responsible for the discovery of novel approaches & targets to treat infectious diseases that threaten our health. The IDRU has an impactful portfolio of projects in bacterial infections, hepatitis B, and viral respiratory infections (including COVID-19) along with collaborations with Vir Biotechnology and 23&Me.

In the Scientific Manager role, you will assume immediate responsibility for leading and/or supporting preclinical or early clinical projects in a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and scientifically driven environment, interacting with scientists across the Research Unit and the broader R&D organization.

Your leadership expertise in infectious disease R&D coupled with an understanding of monoclonal antibodies as a prophylactic/therapeutic modality will enable you to help identify and characterize novel agents for the management of infectious diseases, particularly focused on viral and/or bacterial infections in humans.

As a Scientific Manager you will be expected to interact productively and in an enterprise fashion with teams across the Research Unit as well as with Vaccines and Biopharmaceutical teams at GSK and external R&D partners. The role may also involve evaluation of business development opportunities in infectious disease. To this end you will need to be a strong communicator and able to work and drive positive collaborative interactions with your peers and encourage similar behaviors in your team.

Lead efforts on target identification and validation of monoclonal antibodies targeting infectious disease
Actively contribute to the strategic direction and goals of your projects
Effectively resolve scientific and technical challenges using knowledge and subject matter expertise/ experience to enable program progression.
Clear communication of project evolvements and directions in internal and external meetings.
Participate in the evaluation of novel targets emerging from potential collaborations
Provide scientific insights and strategy on microbiology aspects to support GSK’s drug discovery portfolio.
As a subject matter expert in infectious disease R&D, maintain knowledge of relevant literature, and effective incorporation of the knowledge and technology to positively impact your projects.

Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

PhD or equivalent in the field of Infectious Disease with a preference towards viral and/or bacterial disease pathogenesis
Program/project leadership experience in R&D environment
Experience with monoclonal antibodies or related large molecule modalities to target infectious disease
Experience in identifying and advancing preclinical targets, performing peer review and engaging internal and external partners.
Experience applying innovative approaches in drug discovery using novel techniques for smart risk taking

Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

Ph.D. +/- postdoctoral research in Infectious Disease field
5+ years pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology experience working in a matrixed drug discovery or development project teams
Previous experience with leading internal and/or external preclinical infectious disease projects in pharma or biotech environment
Previous experience with supporting regulatory submission of antibacterial or antiviral agents
Demonstrated experience in:
Working with viruses and/or bacteria that are relevant for human disease
Expertise in viral and/or bacterial pathogenesis research
Monoclonal antibodies or related large molecule modalities
Mode-of-action studies with monoclonal antibodies
Proficient with standard office products including Excel, GraphPad Prism, and Powerpoint
Ability to adapt to changing priorities
Strong work ethic with desire to carry out independent hypothesis generation and testing
Proactive and highly self-motivated self-starter with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
Outstanding written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated capability to work effectively individually and in fast-paced team/matrix environments
