Department Summary
The Office of Sustainability supports the integration of sustainability into the University of OregonÂ’s operations, curriculum, co-curriculum, research and engagement with the broader community. We accomplish this through a number of policy initiatives and programs, largely in partnership with a wide range of units. We are responsible for the management of: Comprehensive Environmental Policy, Climate Action Plan, Greenhouse gas inventory, STARS data collection and reporting, Green Office Certification program, Sustainability Ambassadors Program, Sustainability Faculty Fellows program, Environmental Leaders Academic Residential Community, UO Sustainability Awards, campus Surplus furniture program, energy management, and SCORE. The Office of Sustainability is a unit within Campus Planning and Facilities Management in the Finance and Administration portfolio. Finance and Administration is a varied portfolio serving all aspects of campus life. Our employees perform a wide range of functions including offering essential financial tools and support to the universityÂ’s many departments, providing key resources to employees, and keeping campus safe, clean, accessible and beautiful.

Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. We plan, build, maintain, and operate the infrastructure that supports the University of Oregon's mission of exceptional teaching, discovery, and public service. Position Summary
The University of Oregon Campus Natural Areas Steward is an exciting and dynamic role that requires a range of skills and abilities, from hands-on restoration work, to developing engagement opportunities for students and faculty, writing and managing grants or otherwise securing and managing funding through partnerships, and collaborating with a range of on and off-campus stakeholders. The vision for our campus natural areas is restoration and preservation, as well as increased campus and community connection and identification with these important, under-utilized campus spaces.

The steward will be responsible for overseeing the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of designated natural areas on the Eugene campus, consistent with our Campus Plan. The Willamette River Natural Area (WRNA), which includes a restoration and management plan to guide work at the site, and Millrace Natural Area are formally designated natural areas in the Campus Plan. This role will implement strategies to preserve and enhance biodiversity, maintain ecological balance, and provide educational, research, and engagement opportunities for students, faculty, and the community.

In addition to restoration and management, the steward will work with a range of stakeholders in a diverse, highly-engaged environment, including campus staff, faculty, students, contractors, environmental experts, the general public and local government and organizations, to ensure the successful preservation and enhancement of campus natural areas. The steward will be responsible for securing funding for restoration and related projects, through grants or other methods, as well monitoring and reporting against that funding.

Special Requirement
This position will require a valid driverÂ’s license and the ability to obtain UO DriverÂ’s Certification.

Work Schedule
Monday-Friday, primarily business hours but some off hours work (evenings, weekends) required.

Essential Personnel
This is an essential position requiring that the employee make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times unless otherwise notified by their supervisor or manager. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information.

Minimum Requirements
• 3-5 years proven experience in ecological restoration habitat management, and native plant species identification.
• 3 years of experience in organizing educational events, workshops, volunteering, and/or community outreach activities.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecology, natural resources management, environmental studies, sustainability, or related field, or 5 years’ work experience and/or other education equivalent to the same amount of knowledge.

Professional Competencies
• Knowledgeable in principles and methods of environmental management and natural resource sciences, particularly those related to invasive species and restoration planning and execution.
• Ability to navigate complex environments and work effectively with a range of stakeholders and collaborators, including Landscape and Grounds maintenance team, contractors, students, faculty teachers and researchers, the general public, police officers, executives and officials of public agencies or private organizations.
• Ability to read and interpret city code, the campus plan, and similar planning and guidance documents to ensure work is consistent with requirements.
• Ability to secure external funding for projects or programs from grants, donors, partners, or others.
• Effectively use varied and appropriate public and campus involvement methods and processes.
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and manage projects, budgets, and timelines effectively.
• Strong understanding of local ecosystems, invasive species management, and conservation practices.
• Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting using relevant tools and software.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with finding, writing, and administrating grants and/or fundraising.
• Familiarity with university research, teaching, and culture.
• Experience working with Tribal nations and representatives, and other governmental staff and representatives.
