Department Summary
Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. The units of CPFM strive to provide excellent customer service to the University of Oregon campus and operate with the highest professional standards, communicating and collaborating with customers to support the stewardship of the campus.

Utilities and Energy (U&E) provides Steam, Chilled Water, Electricity, and other district energy services for the University of Oregon. The Utilities and Energy Department is comprised of specialized and diverse staff including Electrical Technicians, Utility Plant Operators, Maintenance Technicians, and administrative staff. The Utilities and Energy staff work 24 hours a day to ensure safe, reliable, and energy efficient utilities are delivered to the University of Oregon. The department is responsible for all aspects of operations, maintenance, and repairs of the campus utility systems including a 10MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, 6.5MW emergency power generation, production and distribution of campus heating steam using two industrial natural gas fired boilers, production and distribution of electrical power, 7,500 ton chilled water plant, 4 million gallon chilled water thermal tank and distribution system, compressed air, and other services to more than 80 buildings and over 4 miles of distribution tunnels. The department works closely with other campus departments from across different business units to ensure effective operations, avoid unsafe conditions, and mitigate service interruptions in all utility functions.

Position Summary
The General Maintenance Mechanic provides the technical skills needed to perform small repairs and preventive maintenance. This includes performing routine, preventive and planned corrective maintenance on mechanical system related to the operation of the steam and chill water plants including steam boilers, chillers, air compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, electro-pneumatic control components, de-aerating feed tanks, valves, piping, steam traps and flow meters. This position is expected to learn the Utility Plants operation, for inspecting, adjusting, maintaining and repairing plant operating systems, such as heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, refrigeration units, pneumatic controls, boilers, or conveyor, locking, or irrigation systems and controls direct digital controls for boilers and energy management systems.

Interaction and contacts occur daily with CPFM and the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies. This position will also work with the electrical and maintenance staff within the Utilities and Energy Department on a daily basis. The position will also be in contact with outside contractors, vendors and regulatory agencies.

Position works as a member of a team. Decisions made by this position effect the entire University. The incumbent will be part of a team that is responsible for maintaining a continuous flow of electricity, steam, chilled water and other utilities to the University in normal and emergency situations.

Work is reviewed regularly by the supervisor to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.

Work Schedule:
This position will typically work Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position may work non-typical hours and shifts including nights, and weekends, and subject to shift rotation. This position is classified as Essential Personnel.

Driving Requirement:
It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driverÂ’s license throughout employment in this position.

On Call Rotation:
This position may be required to participate in an on call rotation. Being on call requires the participant to live in an area with cell phone reception or to be within cell phone reception for the entire duration of the on call period. On call also requires the participant to be within a 1 hour drive of the UO campus for the entire duration of the on call period to be able to respond to issues if needed. On call periods are typically 1-4 weeks in duration.

Essential Personnel:
This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.

Minimum Requirements
• Four years of experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating parts for machinery, tools, and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, hydraulic systems, lift trucks, etc.; OR
• Completion of an approved Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.
