Full-time Wetland Soil Scientist (3638)

at Three Saints Bay, LLC in Mississippi

Bennett Aerospace Inc., a subsidiary of Three Saints Bay, LLC, and a Federal Government Contractor industry leader, has an opening for a highly motivated Wetland Soil Scientist located in Vicksburg, MS in support of The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Ecological Resources Branch (EEE), Water Research Integrating Socio-ecological and Engineered Systems (WRISES) Team in execution of its mission.

Position Responsibilities:
Research investigating the formation and fate of iron sulfides (FeS) in ecosystem restoration projects
Execute research tasks to expand ERDCÂ’s understanding of wetland responses to restoration activities.
Conduct research investigating the formation and fate of iron sulfides (FeS) in a restoration context
Recent studies have documented the development of FeS following restoration actions, and FeS has the capacity to alter soil chemistry through oxidation and generation of sulfuric acid. As a result, materials containing FeS pose challenges to wetland restoration success and more research is required to inform wetland restoration practitioners about this topic.
Assist with the design and execution of mesocosm and field studies investigating FeS formation and fate under a variety of wetland restoration scenarios; the results of which will be used to parametrize a model to predict the effect of FeS on future restoration initiatives.
Execute research that will expand ERDCÂ’s understanding of wetland soil responses during the restoration of wetlands.
Conduct a series of laboratory, field, and mesocosm studies focused on physicochemical, microbial, and vegetation responses to different environmental conditions.
Major tasks include:

Documenting changes in carbon character and degradation dynamics following vegetation burial and salinity increase
Investigating iron-sulfide (FeS) development
Integrating novel subaqueous soil mapping into Department of Defense operations
Developing approaches to support map overlays and future scenario analysis of natural threats.
To address each of these research tasks, the candidate will collect and evaluate field samples and develop and execute laboratory experiments.
Perform a number of different methods to evaluate soil and vegetation properties.
Soil/sediment/vegetation sample collection
Laboratory soil/sediment/vegetation microcosm studies
Analysis of total and extractable nutrient concentrations
Enzyme activity assays
Potentially mineralizable nitrogen concentrations
Soil morphology and structure
Response to a variety of oxidation-reduction potentials
Dissolved organic carbon quality and fluorescence profile, and
Solid phase mineralogy
Collectively these measurements will inform the ways in which soil/sediment/vegetation interactions change under a variety of burial, salinity, and environmental gradient conditions.
Box models will be developed to support other collaborators, who shall incorporate these datasets into a range of models representing different spatial domains.

Position Requirements:

BachelorÂ’s Degree + 7-10 years of experience in the field or related area or;
MasterÂ’s Degree in their field of specialty + 2-5 years of experience in the field or related area or; a
PhD in their field of specialty + 0-1 year of experience in the field related area
